Charming Production of A Grand Night for Singing Delights at Seven Angels Theatre
By Kiersten Bjork (May 1, 2026)
Rodgers and Hammerstein’s A Grand Night for Singing at Seven Angels Theatre, currently playing through May 10 at the Waterbury venue, is a charming production. With music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, the show features all of your favorite R&H hits, from “Some Enchanted Evening” and “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair” (South Pacific), to “My Little Girl” and “When the Children Are Asleep” (Carousel), and more from State Fair, Cinderella, Oklahoma!, The Sound of Music, The King and I, and beyond. The show was originally conceived by Walter Bobbie, and includes musical arrangements by Fred Wells and orchestrations by Michael Gibson and Jonathan Tunick.
Under the direction of Seven Angels’ artistic director, Constantine Pappas, and musical director Richard Carsey, A Grand Night for Singing is elegant, classy, and is sure to be a delight for theatregoers. The music of Rodgers and Hammerstein is gorgeous, and the ensemble that has been assembled to carry the tunes does an excellent job.

The Seven Angels company features Abigail Hammond, Morgan Cowling, Elizabeth Fox, Charles Romano, and Kenneth Galm, each delivering a range of songs from the R&H catalogue. All are strong vocally, and I was admittedly impressed by both Romano and Galm who present rather young, but possessed the vocal talent to embody the iconic numbers well.
Romano’s “This Nearly Was Mine” and “We Kiss in a Shadow” showcase his rich tone, while Galm’s boyish charm is on full display in numbers such as “That’s The Way It Happens,” while he breaks hearts with “Love, Look Away.” Hammond, Cowling, and Fox are equally as talented, giving strong, witty, dynamic performances throughout the evening. Hammond shines on “Do I Love You Because You’re Beautiful,” while Cowling earns laughs with “I Cain’t Say No,” and Fox pulls out a show-stopper with “It’s Me.”
The group numbers, from “Carousel Waltz/So Far/It’s A Grand Night For Singing,” to “Impossible/I Have Dreamed,” are some of the best moments of the production. All five are talented vocalists, but together they have mastered the intricate harmonies and stunning melodies that makes this music so special. The group work is incredibly tight and seems almost effortless in delivery.

Since it’s a musical revue, there isn’t too much by way of design for this production. There are a handful of props utilized, from a bouquet of flowers to a rather large cigarette, and tables and chairs are set and struck as needed. Lighting design by Charles O’Connor is tasteful and effective, adding nice touches–including a star curtain–throughout. Each of the performers has a single costume look for the show, and each is a sophisticated, stylish outfit that suits them well.
The band, including musical director Carsey on piano, Eric Pelletier on reeds, Igor Lepak on bass, and Mark Ryan and Bob Nolte on percussion, is wonderful, and becomes part of the overall look of the production as they are sat upstage center. There are fun moments of interaction between musicians and actors throughout, and the overall sound is great.
